    "Not R.R. Haywoods finest hour"

This is going to be a tough review for me to write but I have to be honest. This book was a massive disappointment. I’ve been a huge fan of R.R. Haywood’s ‘The Undead’ zombie apocalypse series and have been waiting for what seems like ages for the next instalment. In lieu of a zombie fix I thought I’d give this a try to see if it lived up to the exploits of Howie and his gang from Undead. Sadly, it didn’t.

Gaslit revolves around a disgraced police officer who is down on his luck following an incident that occurred while he was on duty. We learn the details about the incident over time and how this led to his reduced state. In desperation he accepts a job as a security guard for a Lord who needs his stately home housesat while a legal disagreement is settled.

Once in the house, there are all manner of strange goings on, and things that literally go bump in the night. None of which seem to phase Mike in the slightest. He also meets a bunch of local characters and very quickly becomes involved in a difficult love triangle.

Through various methods and persuasions Mike is convinced to do something that seems an outrageous overreaction to events and the story then reveals its one, half decent, twist.

The marketing for the book tries to sell it as a twist no one can see coming, but to be honest by the time it came I didn’t care. It was all so unbelievable and contrived that the twist (which wasn’t much of a twist and was full of holes) wasn’t that relevant.

I hate giving a bad review, and I did fly through this book in a couple of days, so I guess it was readable and mercifully brief. I would recommend The Undead series to readers and I would recommend sticking to zombies to R.R. Haywood. Sorry.
