Is it OK to change the title?

The title of a book is so important to drive sales, should it ever be changed?

When I was writing War Inc. I never really gave much thought to the title. I can't remember when or how I came up with the name, it was just the name of the original Word file and then became the name of the Google Doc that I used to finish the manuscript over a decade later.

By the time it came to publishing, the name was so intrinsic to the book, the story and the effort that I had put in that I didn't even consider anything else. That might have been my first mistake. Had I managed to find a publisher I am sure they would have questioned the title, given suggestions for alternatives and really made me consider whether this was the right shop window for my story.

You shouldn't judge a book by its cover but its title does have a huge impact on whether someone feels its for them or not, even at a subconcious level. Being called War Inc. immediately makes people think that its a story predominantly about war. Quite a reasonable conclusion to jump to. But war is just the backdrop, or the vehicle through which the political satire plays out. Its the extreme example of what might happen which makes the story more compelling.

I recently had a promoted post on a review account on Instagram. I was amazed by the amount of comments along the lines of "this isn't what I would usually read", but it probably is, they just think its a war book. So I am thinking about a change in the title, after all its a marketing hook and not actually that relevant to the story. The term 'War Inc.' isn't mentioned once in the book. A different name, with broader appeal, might help me to get more people to click on the book when they search on Amazon, and to not rule it out based on a single word on the cover.

I don't want to change it, this book has always lived in my head as War Inc. but I need to face the reality.
